PA Alpha Prepares for Second Double-lung Transplant
Barry Gross of Freemansburg, PA is undergoing something many people will never have to do—he’s having a SECOND double-lung transplant.
Gross, 51, was diagnosed with Alpha-1 at the age of 12 or 13 after his family discovered many of his relatives were afflicted with the genetic condition.
In 1995 he had his first successful double-lung transplant. According to statistics, the average life-span for someone who’s had a double-lung transplant is just 5 years. Well, Gross defied the odds and made it over ten! However, chronic lung infections over the last two years and intravenous meds to treat them caused deterioration of his second pair of lungs.
