NE Journal of Medicine Outlines Limits of GINA

The New England Journal of Medicine outlines the provisions of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) in the medical magazine’s June 19 issue.

When it becomes effective in 2009, GINA will prohibit employers and insurers from using genetic testing or information in making hiring or coverage decisions.

GINA does not cover life, disability or long-term-care insurance, however. It also does not mandate insurance coverage for any particular treatment or test, nor does it eliminate the pre-existing condtion clauses in health insurance contracts.
