Flotte, New UMass Center Director Lead Gene Therapy Research Effort
Guangping Gao knew he had do something. In 1994 the Chinese-born scientist was celebrating having cloned the gene that causes Canavan disease, a brain disorder that afflicts children. His doctoral thesis and degree in biomedical sciences at Florida International University were based on the success.
Some children with the condition, whose gene samples helped with his research, came to the party. Their parents carried them, unable to hold their heads up because the disease causes them to be so big.
