The picture story of Sophia and her family
Sophia Boyer is a bright-eyed three year old who loves to play with her sisters Abigail, 5 and Tatum, 4. But the scars that crisscross her stomach are a reminder of a much sicker Sophia.
In December of 2005, she was diagnosed with Alpha-1. Just one year later, her liver disease advanced to severe cirrhosis and her parents, Brian and Laura, were told that she would need a liver transplant within the year. On December 24, 2006 Sophia was given the gift of life.
The Boyer family has faced over $100,000 in medical expenses after her transplant, and Sophia’s small body continues to fight rejection. Now, Tatum—who was also diagnosed with Alpha-1—is in Stage 2 Liver Disease and awaits a liver transplant.
